I received the Hot Dots Jr. Pre-K Math set from Educational Insights for review purposes. My 4 11/12 year old has used Hot Dots before; she has both pens (Ace & Kat), two of the Interactive Storybooks, and a Phonics set. She was very excited to begin the Math work because she loves to work with numbers.Let me begin with one tip for parents and educators: this program requires adult (or literate child) guidance. There are specific instructions throughout the two books that assist the child in choosing the correct answer(s). And sometimes, the instructions are opposite to a similarly-formatted question the child may have encountered in a previous lesson. Let's Master Pre-K Math is NOT a self-directed exercise for your child, unless of course, (s)he is reading proficiently. My child enjoyed working through the well-crafted, spiral bound books. She loves the talking pen and has come to understand, through trial and error, that using it carefully and correctly really does matter. (There are specific instructions for use in the box.) I like the objectivity of the pen: Mom or Dad isn't the one telling you whether your answer is right or wrong. Granted, the phrases and buzzing get a tad annoying for an adult, but my kid really loves the self-correction that Ace provides. The lessons range from one-to-one correspondence to number symbol identification, with introductions to plane shapes, fractions, time, measurement, and sequencing & patterns. The content would be best suited to 3-4 year olds. The box states 4+, but my 4 11/12 year old (still a preschooler as she cannot enter K until next year according to our state) made her way through both books in under an hour, with few mistakes. The kind of parent who would purchase this for their child has probably introduced their child to other educational concepts and materials, so I might suggest ordering the next level up. My daughter's favorite exercise was actually the last challenge question, wherein you are asked to choose the correct quantity of ladybugs (there are 100). She initially used her powers of deduction to rule out the first 2 much smaller sums, then wanted to count each ladybug individually to make SURE there were 100.The inclusion of the pen is great, but if you purchase more than one set (I think the Pre-K Reading would be good to use in tandem), you have multiple pens that really don't have any additional functions outside the Hot Dots materials. I would have liked to see the set include some kind of rote counting number line that might reinforce the most basic math skills.Solid B+

Did not work right out of the box.
We just opened this after being a reward for using the potty. The pen keeps giving an incorrect sound/phrase no matter which dot you touch. Not a good sign for this company's products...Read complete review

Babysitter Grammy Review
from Salem, Ma
About Me Grandparent
My grandson is 2 1/2 and I purchased the Phonics, PreK Math and Reading Kits. I wasn't sure he was old enough yet, or would be interested at all, but thought we would try them as playing cars and trucks on a daily basis gets old for Grammy fast. He is a slow talker, but his motor skills are keen, so he was able to hold dog pen straight up and pin point the black dot he chose for his answers. At first he was mostly interested in touching every dot with the pen,But when hearing the dog speak, bark, and carry on he waas correct with answer delighted and got the idea. Because I hope he finds learning fun, we don't use these books and flash cards unless he request, as he is so young. His favorite is the math pre K espically the time story sequence. These are a great addition to supervised playtime for parents and caregivers, I am very pleased with my purchase.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Hot Dots Jr. makes learning math fun

About Me Parent Of Two Or More Children, Stay At Home Parent
My son who just turned 5 loves this set. He loves counting, shapes, numbers, and all of that and so this is more fun than work for him. The dog is a great partner for him as he learns and goes through the books (there are 2 50-page books) and the set has really helped him remember more and learn faster than before. He is in preschool, but this is a great at home resource for us. Great for traveling as well.Disclaimer: I received product in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are 100% my own.
Fun and Interactive Way to Learn Math

About Me Parent Of Two Or More Children
My daughter just started Kindergarten this year so I wanted to make sure I got her some fun learning tools other than boring workbooks. I find kids love to learn with interactive things but I do not always like her on electronics. I prefer more hands on and that is exactly why I love the Hot Dots Jr. Let's Master Pre-K Math set. This set features a fun and interactive blue dog pen which requires two AAA batteries not included. To engage, children have to touch the pen to the dot to select the correct answer. There are TONS of lessons, included in the two books which has been keeping my five year old VERY busy!

Great for beginner math, the kids loved counting out the different answers and finding what matched with what. They were having so much fun they didn't even realize they were doing math!

I have 5 year old twin boy and we own a few other Hot Dots Jr sets but this one seems to be their favorite! The interactive pen, "Ace", is adorable. My kids love using him! And he can be used with the other sets too, which is great! (Although "Ollie" the talking Owl is another adorable pen that comes with the other sets, making the choice of which to use quite difficult for a child. Ha!)I am very pleased with the quality of the box. It is very durable and has a strong handle allowing it to be carried and stacked by the kiddos without getting easily destroyed. The two spiral bound books are also durable and laminated. They are very nicely laid out with colorful pages and just the right amount of content on each page.My kids have enjoyed working through the pages of both books. I really like how the books progress in skills. It allows my boys to have fun while learning but also challenges them without getting frustrated. Because of their age and their lack of ability to read the instructions themselves, I did have to guide them through the activities the first few times that they used the books. In my opinion, it was just another way for me to monitor what they could do and keep track of their progress.

We sit down every night with one of the books that comes in this series with the intention of doing only a few pages, but always end up doing the entire book. I use it as a supplement for homeschooling my daughter and she thoroughly enjoys it. I love seeing her face light up when she gets a question correct and even when she misses she is determined to sit and think about what the answer could be. I also like the fact that there is sequencing and shapes not just numbers. The only thing I would suggest is possibly suggest is to have a Dog wand for the math set and Cat for the reading set so you don't have two of the same wand like we do.

My daughter is a very reluctant learner. Her preschool teacher sent home flashcards for her to practice using her numbers, but neither of us really enjoy learning that way. When I gave her the Hot Dots, Jr. Let's Master Pre-K Math set, she was excited to get Ace the Talking Dog for her very own. Act uses sounds, music and/or words to encourage her when she gets the answer wrong and to praise her when she gets the answer right.Even though there are written instructions that change every few pages, she has been able to figure out pretty quickly on her own what the objective for each question is. This has let me be less involved and let her be more self-directed (and self-motivated!) to learn and practice on her own. Because the questions vary, she doesn't get bored as quickly and easily as she does when she has to do flash cards.Overall, I would recommend this to others whose kids don't want to spend much time practicing numbers and other math concepts using traditional methods.(I received this product in exchange for writing a review. Regardless, all thoughts and opinions are purely my own.)
A Good Push For My 2.5 Year Old
My 2.5 year old son likes this a lot! He likes to learn and prefers educational toys over others. He loves using the Ace the Dog pen but it needs to be treated carefully. I am constantly reminding him it only goes in the book. I like that Ace tells him if the answer is correct or incorrect. This allows him to learn without me constantly saying no. I appreciate that the books are spiral bound...makes it more durable for excited little hands. My son loves taking these books in the car. It is an activity he can do in his carseat and doesn't make a mess! It is a little hard for him to do it alone though because he doesn't understand all of the instructions just yet. Although he uses it in the carseat he doesn't do as well with it like he does when I am sitting next to him explaining what each section wants him to do. This is a great way for kids to learn without them feeling like you are forcing learning on them. Tools that teach in a creative way will always be a win in my book! My son isn't in preschool yet but he will be way ahead of the class when he starts. Thanks Educational Insights!
Great Learning Tool
By Miss Frugal Mommy
This has been a great learning tool for my pre-school aged son and he really enjoys using it. Hot Dots Jr. does a very good job at creating content that is both engaging and fun for children. I could not be more pleased with the results I am seeing and improvements my son has by because of using this!
