Having a two- and three year old at home, I can attest that these interactive board books are a great way to both fit in some reading time and make your kids feel involved in the learning process. The text poses very simple multiple choice questions (think, "Which picture shows a nose," followed by a picture of a nose, versus another body part) and asks kids to use Elliott the Bear to touch/press down on the correct image selection. If your child answers correctly, Elliott makes a noise. If not, he stays silent. My three year old nailed this concept fairly quickly and enjoyed doing something besides using her finger to point at a picture. My two year old took a bit longer to catch on but eventually grasped what she was supposed to do, thanks to her older sister's modeling. One big perk is that Elliott is easy to grasp, which is especially nice for little fingers that are still becoming accustomed to fine motor skills. In addition, even without Elliott, the illustrations in the two board books are colorful, fun, and definitely appeal to a younger audience. Finally, the books (and accompanying bear stylus) are compact enough to easily fit into a diaper bag or purse, which makes this the perfect take-along toy if you're waiting in line at the grocery store or are sitting in the pediatrician's office. A great idea for a stocking stuffer this holiday season!

My child has been using the Hot Dots Jr and Hot Dots materials for a few years. She enjoys the interactive element of the pen and I love the self-correcting aspect.

The Hot Dots Tots books and Elliot pen are very cute and age appropriate for 1-3 year olds. I like that the books can be used independently if you so choose. The stories are simple, but engaging, with pictures and stories that appeal to the younger set. The Elliot pen enhances the stories, but does need to be explained, and it does not work or sound when on the "wrong" element or with other books. Elliot is also not compatible with the other Hot Dots materials. Depending on your child, that may prove confusing or frustrating.
My child is now 5 and reading (mostly) independently. She liked the books, because, well, she loves all books, and she thought the pen was very cute. But the content was really appropriate for a much younger child. We'll be passing it on to her 1 and 3 year old cousins.

Overall, I love Hot Dots as a concept, but I think it's best used for older children (4- up) who have a better grasp on the abstract usage of the accompanying pen, as well as a stronger leaning toward academic work. I *can* recommend this set to those parents who are really into tech and love to get the latest and greatest educational toys for their youngsters.

I was furnished with a complimentary copy of Hot Dots Tots from Educational Insights for review purposes. All opinions are truthful and my own.

Comments about Educational Insights Hot Dots® Tots All About Me Interactive Board Book Set:

I received this set as a sample for review.
I love the Hot Dots books! My two year old and I love having an opportunity to read the books in a question and answer format. Some of the questions are simple and she always seems to feel accomplished answering them correctly. Others are a bit more challenging, which gives us something to work on together. She loves the illustrations and regularly pulls out these books to look at on her own.
The bear is not a great fit for us just yet. I think when my daughter is closer to three she may enjoy using the bear more. She becomes frustrated when the bear doesn't chime the first time on a correct answer. The fact that there is no "incorrect" chime for a wrong answer makes it more confusing if she doesn't have the bear positioned just right on the correct answer. Still a great concept, but she enjoys just pointing to the right answer at this age.

Hot dots tots all about me is the perfect combination of educational growth and family fun. My 19 month old found it fun to try to pronounce words after I did, follow the pictures, and use the musical teaching bear. My 4 year old also loved the all about me books and used it as a tool to read to me. The trip to the doctor and the birthday party books are both common occurrences that the kids used to put words on actions. We have been using the hot dots collection for pre-k math and reading, and found the entire collection to be such a great learning tool. I can't wait to buy more.

We found that this kept our 2 yr a little more engaged than his other book. We think it's because he has to follow along with Bear pen. The pen is a bit heavy for his little hands and since he's 2 and a boy... he enjoys throwing it around the house. Eek! Other than that we recommend this and the story had a very positive message

Comments about Educational Insights Hot Dots® Tots All About Me Interactive Board Book Set:

I received this from Educational Insights to provide an honest opinion on this toy.

I really like the concept of this toy. The books that come with the set are very durable and the pictures in the books are nice and bright. There are two books included with this set. One is about visiting the doctor and the other is about a birthday party, both of which my daughter is very interested in.

The bear pen is a cute idea but was difficult at times for my 2-year-old as the pen tip had to be placed just right on top of the correct answer for it to light up.

Overall my child enjoyed the toy but the pen needs some work. - See more at: https://www.educationalinsights.com/product/hot+dots--174+tots+animals+interactive+board+book+set.do?sortby=ourPicks&refType=&from=fn&ecList=7&ecCategory=121823#customerreview

I would definitely recommend, what a great product to read to our child, and that our 2yo had to think listen and make her decision by listening and looking at the book. I think it helps that she has a fun bear to click on the pictures and the sounds help her to know she had it right. I wish there was a noise that indicated if it was not correct but I understand why it only makes sounds on the correct answer. The pen is a little tricky that it has to be level or it will not play music if it's on the correct picture.

This product has been a fun addition during our evening story time ritual for our 2 year old. It The storyline includes questions that have two picture options as answers at the base of each page. Upon correctly identifying the picture, the bear chimes with music. The stories are age appropriate and a good learning tool to utilize along with the bedtime routine. Our two year old enjoys the novelty of having the bear to hold and interact with along with the story. The bear does require a decent amount of pressure for a two year old to be applied to the correct photo. The board books seem fit to take multiple pushes without leaving any indentations on the pages.

It really got her talking more about what was happening in the pictures based on the photos at the bottoms of the page. My 2 year old also enjoyed being able to participate when her older sister read the story to her.

Comments about Educational Insights Hot Dots® Tots All About Me Interactive Board Book Set:

I got the Hot Dots All About Me set a few weeks ago, since my kids have REALLY gotten into books and reading lately. I thought this would be nice for them to have a more exciting way to have interaction on their own with a book when my husband & I were busy cooking, etc. I have a 17-month old and a nearly 4-year old - and they both have engaged with the books and pen, but my 4-year old lost interest relatively quickly (like after the first day). I think mainly because the learnings in the book are more for 1-3 year old age span. My 17-month old doesn't have full recognition of what is "over vs. under", "brother vs. sister" - the types of lessons in these books - but she enjoys when the pen lights up if she happens to press in the correct spot :) I'm already seeing her remember some of what she has done before, so she is starting to learn where to push the pen and does play with it when we have it out. The pen lights up and plays a little tune.

I'd give this more stars - but the bear pen seems finicky and doesn't want to work on every page...so you have to push down really hard sometimes, which makes little indents in the board-book material of the book.

The lessons in the books and the idea around getting kids to interact with their books is great, though!
