I ordered 2 so I can divide my students into 2 groups to play. One machine is broken after just 2-3 uses... Whenever I insert a card it says card error! I need to insert every card about 20 times until it recognizes it. Its not the cards fault as when I insert it into the other machine it works perfectly. I have been so careful with these... They have never bumped or fallen or anything! No reason to stop working so fast!

            Comments about QuizSHARK™:

I purchased 7 of these to use in middle school coteaching classes (math and social studies) as well as my small group reading. Since it is so customizable, it has been perfect in all settings. I love that despite the description, the "buzzers" do not make any sound. In fact, all cueing is done with lights…no sound. In my opinion, this is a big plus! In addition, the overall design is age neutral which is so important in getting students to buy in to the product.

Creating cards on the computer turned out to be a huge hassle. Sometimes the text wouldn't fit, and I'd have to go back and readjust the font sizes individually for each question and choice. Some questions have the same choices as previous questions, but I haven't found any way to duplicate a card to save typing time. I would love the option to have the question be a picture rather than text. Answer choices can be pictures, and typed questions can be accompanied by a picture, but it would be nice to screen capture a question and skip the typing altogether.

The printing was the biggest problem. Printing through Internet Explorer never worked even following the directions to a T. I had better success through Firefox. The directions say to make sure it isn't resized to fit, but this did not work. I followed the directions of setting the margins to 0 for all but the left (0.3), but I did decrease the size of the card to 97%. This seemed to be the magic number where both cut lines would show and the machine would still read the card correctly.

In use, we had occasional problems with cards not working. Today, I had 3 QuizSharks that actually gave the wrong choice as the correct answer, but gave the right choice in other readers. I'm finding that some readers are a little less dependable than others.

Also, despite the description, there is no "race" to input answers which, to me, is a positive. The students can work through the problem. After the last person inputs an answer, the correct answer is shown and each player can see if he/she answered correctly. The students who answered correctly knew that they were then in charge to help the struggling student understand what should have been done to answer the question. If no one answered correctly, they knew to ask the teacher for assistance. It helped me concentrate my attention on the groups who struggled the most. (I also intentionally grouped my students heterogeneously which ensured most of the time a knowledgeable student was working with a student who might be struggling.)

On two separate occasions, I've had students who have been called out of class and had to leave the game. There is no easy solution to this (that I am aware of). You either have to keep inputting an answer for the missing student to be able to continue the activity or restart the unit (and scores are lost). Buzzers cannot be taken out or turned off mid-game.

It costs me quite a bit to put batteries in these! (Something to think about beyond the base price.) The battery cost alone makes me second guess letting other teachers borrow the Quiz Sharks only because I'm not sure how quickly they eat through the batteries. The way the classrooms are designed at my school, AC adaptors were not a viable option. The good news is that the current price on these can't be beat which helps make up for the amount invested in batteries.

When all is said and done, the true test of any product is how the students benefitted from it. My students actually asked to use this again and felt it really helped them. Every student was engaged; the natural design of the system is that every person in the group has to be involved. Big plus! There is also natural peer pressure to try to answer correctly. This is the reason I chose to give this 4 stars despite some frustrations and quality control issues.

                Comments about QuizSHARK™:

I am able to generate questions that coincide with the curriculum. The only problem is that I have to hand write my questions. Although there is a CD to download and generate questions, when it's printed out, the correct answer barcode does not align with the system. I've tried the CD on several different computers and still it won't work. This makes creating questions very tedious and long. I wish I could cut and paste as well as generated the questions directly from the computer. But for the price, you can't beat it!

I use this in my third grade classroom and the students love it. I use it during center/group learning and then it gets added to our selection of educational games which the students can use when they finish work assignments, tests... This is always the first game they choose to play. They love it and will play it over and over. They are getting tons of review and are having so much fun doing it. I even bought a second one when it went on sale so more students can play.
